Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
JUNE 7, 1940
President Manuel L. Quezon of the Commonwealth of the Philippines completed his work on legislations made by the 2nd Philippine Assembly.
He signed 60 out of the 87 bills and allowed 13 to become law without affixing his signature. 14 were vetoed.
Quezon tackled the problem of the peasants without lands in the countryside.
He prioritized the military defense capabilities of the country and reorganized the government.
He pushed for the promotion of settlements in Mindanao and its development. He fought graft and corruption in his government and worked on land reform among others.
During World War II, Quezon left for the United States and established a government-in-exile.
While in America, he died of tuberculosis and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
After the war, his remains were brought home and placed at the Quezon Memorial Circle.
