Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
JUNE 9, 1904
American authorities accused General Artemio Ricarte of rebellion, conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms, and insurrection against the government.
Earlier in 1900, he was captured by the Americans and deported to Guam along with Apolinario Mabini and other revolutionaries.
They were later pardoned and allowed to come back home in 1903.
Mabini pledged his allegiance to the United States but Ricarte refused to take his oath of allegiance so he was not allowed to set foot on Philippine soil and was sent to Hongkong instead.
He secretly came home and raised a revolt in Rizal province but he was captured and was imprisoned at the Bilibid Prison for 6 years.
"Vibora" (viper) as he was called was known as the "Father of the Philippine Army." During the Philippine-American War, he was the chief of operations of the entire Filipino forces.
