In the 60's the D' William's Rockers, a combo composed of my dad and his siblings made waves here in Cebu. They were called combo and not band in those days.
One of the unique things they did was to perform live after the end of a movie screening in the family-owned movie house Cebu Theatre along Colon St. as well as other family-operated movie houses such as Center and New Gems. I wonder why they did not perform at Constellation Theater though.
When I was a little boy (probably late 60's or early 70's), I still remember them practicing a Beatles song at Columbia Theatre before going to perform at Capitol Hotel.
D' William's Rockers is composed of William + (organ and leader), Edwin + (bass), Wilkie + (rhythm and crooner), Edward (lead), Edith (drums), and Helen Cayabyab (crooner).
Handled by my grandfather Kieng San (Charles) Uy, they always won first prize in combo contests here in Cebu. Worth mentioning were the ones at the Cebu Coliseum, Cebu City Hall in celebration of independence day, and at the University of the Visayas Green and White Combo Festival.
They played regularly at night spots in Lapulapu City such as the Sapphire, Blue Diamond, El Torro, Golden Shower, Pals Night Club and others.
