Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
JUNE 15, 1991
Mount Pinatubo erupted for the first time after 600 years and brought a devastation never before seen in the country that also caused a worldwide effect.
It brought ash falls that forced more than a hundred thousand people in the area to evacuate.
The United States' Clark Air Base, a major air force base in the Philippines and Subic Bay Naval Station were heavily damaged by ash.
The eruption also brought minor earthquakes in the area.
Lahars buried numerous towns and villages. Mt. Pinatubo is a stratovolcano located in Zambales Mountains in the boundaries of Zambales, Tarlac and Pampanga in Central Luzon.
