The South East Asia Collective Defense Treaty

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

SEPTEMBER 8, 1954

The South East Asia Collective Defense Treaty or the Manila Pact was signed in Manila by representatives from Australia, France, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

As part of the Truman Doctrine of creating anti-communist bilateral and collective defense treaties, the Manila Pact established the South East Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) on February 19, 1955 to be the regional defense organization in Southeast Asia. It’s headquarters was in Bangkok, Thailand. SEATO was dissolved on June 30, 1977.
