Regino Garcia

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):

SEPTEMBER 7, 1840

Regino Garcia (September 7, 1840 - July 6, 1916), an artist, botanist, forester and revolutionary, was born in Manila. 

He was a printing instructor at the University of Santo Tomas, and the Director of Walks, Garden and Parks of the Manila Botanical Garden. Garcia worked with the Forestry Service from 1877 to 1898. 

He was one of the noted botanical illustrators of Fr. Francisco Manuel Blanco’s Flora de Filipinas which was published between 1877 and 1883. 

During the Philippine-American War, he resigned from his job and joined General Emilio Agunaldo’s army and was appointed as colonel in the engineering corps and supervised the construction of fortification and defense works along the Calumpit River. 

In 1900, Garcia served as a botanist at the Forestry Bureau.
