6 To 7 Million Attend Pope Francis Mass

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

JANUARY 18, 2015

Papal history was made when Pope Francis made his closing Mass at the Luneta where around 6 to 7 million people gathered.

Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi called it “the largest event in the history of the Popes.”

The gathering surpassed the World Youth Day Mass of Pope John Paul II in January 1995 where the crowd was around 4-5 million, the biggest at that time.

Pope Francis visited the Philippines from January 15 to 19, 2015. Amid a storm, he went to Tacloban a day earlier to be with the people devastated by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013.
