Rafael del Pan

JUNE 17, 1863

Rafael del Pan (June 17, 1863 - May 12, 1915), a lawyer, journalist, reformist, nationalist and the first criminologist of the Philippines was born in Intramuros, Manila. 

His father, Don Jose Felipe del Pan was a Spaniard while his mother, Amalia Garcia Fontela was a Filipina. 

He left for Spain at the age of seven for his studies and later returned to the country to study at Ateneo Municipal. 

He finished Bachiller en Artes at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran and completed law at the Central University of Madrid in Spain and obtained the Licenciado en Jurisprudenciaon. 

Del Pan was the first to translate Jose Rizal’s “Mi Ultimo Adios” into English and is one of the founders of Camara de Comercio and the Nacionalista Party. 

He authored the Correctional (Criminal) Code which compiled and codified the penal laws of the Philippines.
