Evangelina Estrada-Kalaw

JUNE 16, 1920

Evangelina Estrada-Kalaw (June 16, 1920 - May 25, 2017), a stateswoman and senator, was born in Murcia, Tarlac (now Concepcion, Tarlac). 

Her parents were Dr. Salvador Estrada and Demetria Reynada. 

She finished Bachelor of Science in Education, Major in Home Economics at the University of the Philippines and taught in different universities while pursuing her post graduate studies. 

She married Teodoro Kalaw Jr. in 1944 and had 4 children. 

Eva served in the Senate from 1965 to 1972 and was one of the key opposition leaders during the presidency of Pres. Ferdinand E. Marcos. 

She authored laws that included the salary standardization for public school personnel, creation of the school board, Magna Carta for Private Schools, and Educational Financing Act, among others. She was the first-ever female Filipino senator to win two consecutive terms.
