Capt. Pedro Janolino Leads His Men To Murder Gen. Luna

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):

JUNE 5, 1899

Captain Pedro Janolino and his men assassinated General Antonio Luna.

Janolino was a commanding officer of the Kawit troops under Pres. Emilio Aguinaldo and was also known as Capt. Pedro Castila, who led the naval infantry in the Battle of Alapan on May 28, 1898.

During the Battle of Caloocan on February 10, 1899, he disobeyed Luna's order to aid him in the battle and said that he only takes orders from Aguinaldo.

Luna disarmed and relieved Janolino and his men for insubordination but was mad when on June 5, 1899 in Cabanatuan, he found out Janolino and the Kawit soldiers were not relieved.

Rushing upstairs, a heated argument transpired between Luna and Felipe Buencamino.

After hearing a shot outside the convent courtyard, Luna rushed downstairs only to be hacked by Janolino using a bolo.

Some Kawit troops joined the attack. Luna was treacherously murdered and died of 30 wounds caused by gunshots and bladed weapons.
