Today in Philippine History: Magellan Arrives in the Philippines

MARCH 16, 1521
Portuguese-born explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrives in the island of Homonhon with around 150 crew members of what’s left of the original 270. He claims the island for Spain and calls it Isla de San Lazaro. Everyone in this expedition earn the distinction as the first Spaniards to arrive in the Philippines.
