SEPTEMBER 14, 1901
US President William McKinley (January 29, 1843 – September 14, 1901) died of gunshot wounds in Buffalo, New York at 2:15 a.m. on September 14, 1901.
He was shot twice in the abdomen at close range by an assassin Leon Czolgosz on September 6, 1901. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt rushed to Buffalo and took the oath of office as president. Czolgosz was put on trial nine days after the death of McKinley. He was found guilty and sentenced to death on September 26, 1901 and was executed by electric chair on October 29, 1901.
McKinley, the 25th president of the United States was the victorious president during the 1898 Spanish-American War. He ordered Commodore George Dewey to destroy the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Manila Bay.
He sent troops to the Philippines and gave Major General Wesley Merritt the power to set up legal systems and raise taxes, which were needed for a long occupation.
The Treaty of Paris, the peace settlement between Spain and America was signed and Spain turned over to the United States her overseas colonies of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. Cuba was promised her independence but was under the control of the United States Army. The independent Republic of Hawaii was annexed in 1898 and became a territory of the United States.
