Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 3):
SEPTEMBER 6, 2005
Congress rejected the impeachment complaints against President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on September 6, 2005.
The House ended the impeachment move by 158 votes to 51, with six abstentions. A minimum of 79 votes were needed for the House to refer the charges to the Senate for trial.
Trying a repeat of the People Power revolts where President Ferdinand E. Marcos and President Joseph Ejercito Estrada were ousted from power, former President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino led an anti-Arroyo protest in the streets but only around 10,000 came. By dusk, the protesters dispersed.
President Arroyo was ecstatic over the decision of the legislators. She thanked the people for not supporting the opposition who wants to oust her by force.
In a statement, she said that "the Filipino people mark a glorious day in history, when instead of forcing a president out of office through `people power,' they chose to keep a president through voting in the halls of constitutional democracy."
The political crisis started in June over allegations that Pres. Arroyo rigged the 2004 presidential elections.
