MAY 5, 1942
The 61st Regiment commanded by Col. Gempachi Sato reinforced with tanks from the 7th Tank Regiment aboard assault crafts and barges landed in Corregidor also known as Fort Mills.
Maj. Gen. Kureo Taguchi's forces composed of the 37th Infantry, one battalion from the 8th Infantry, an element of the 7th Tank Regiment and several artillery units also landed.
The Battle of Corregidor was fought on May 5 - 6, 1942 and was the culmination of the campaign to conquer the Philippines.
American and Filipino troops stood their ground but were no match to the forces of the IJA 14th Army of Gen. Masaharu Homma.
Lt. Gen. Jonathan Wainwright decided to surrender along with his men.
