Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
MAY 7, 1899
Local elections for provincial and municipal posts in the Philippine Islands were held under the American occupation.
Gen. Henry Ware Lawton supervised the first local election in Baliuag, Bulacan.
During this time, the Philippine-American War was raging which began on February 4, 1899.
The war officially ended on July 2, 1902. It was on July 30, 1907 when the first national election for members of the Philippine Assembly was held.
It was the first fully elected legislative body and was one half of the bicameral Philippine Legislature.
The Philippine Assembly became the lower house while the appointed Philippine Commission was the upper house. Sergio Osmeña was the first Speaker of the Assembly.
