Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
MARCH 6, 1521
Ferdinand Magellan and his men arrived in a west Pacific island which he named Islas Ladrones (Island of Thieves, which later was named Marianas, in honor of Maria Ana of Austria, Queen Regent of Spain), after some Chamorros stole a boat from his flagship.
Magellan then proceeded westward and landed at Homonhon on March 16, 1521.
He called the island Islas de San Lazaro, in honor of St. Lazarus whose feast day fell on that day.
