Philippine Heart Center

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

FEBRUARY 14, 1975

The Philippine Heart Center (formerly Philippine Heart Center for Asia) was inaugurated.

The PHC is a government corporation organized and existing under and by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 673 issued by President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

The institution is committed to save lives and alleviates thousands who suffer from cardiovascular diseases.

The PHC building which is located in East Avenue, Dilliman, Quezon City, was designed by Architect Jorge Ramos.

It displays art collections and the most notable is the mural by National Artist Vicente Manansala titled “Inang Bayan” which featured First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos.

The first director of the PHC was Avelino P. Aventura and the first patient to be admitted was Imelda Francisco on April 14, 1975.

World renowned cardiovascular specialists visited the Heart Center and among them were Christiaan Barnard who performed the first heart transplant in 1967, and Denton Cooley who did the first implantation of an artificial heart in a human in 1970.

The Philippine Heart Center was given a Qmentum International Gold Accreditation for August 2014 - 2017 by Accreditation Canada International for "excellence in hospital practices and safety.”

During the inauguration which was Valentine’s Day 1975, Pres.
