Pres. Elpidio Quirino Meets Pope Pius XII

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):

October 9, 1951

President Elpidio Quirino met with Pope Pius XII at Castel Gandolfo the papal summer residence outside Rome on October 9, 1951.

He was accompanied by his daughter Victoria, Ambassador to the Holy See former Chief Justice Manuel Moran, Jose Yulo and Nenita Moran Garcia, and their group. Quirino proposed to the Pope the idea of having a cardinal in the Philippines.

On April 8, 1951, the Holy See and the Philippines signed the first treaty that established ties, which raised the Holy See’s Apostolic Delegation to the Philippines to the status of Apostolic Nunciature.

The next day, Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, becoming the very first Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines. (Archbishop Vagnozzi became Cardinal in 1967).

The Archbishop was received at Malacañan Palace by President Elipidio Quirino for the presentation of his credentials on June 20, 1951.

President Elpidio Quirino is the first Philippine President to meet the Pope.
