Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
APRIL 2, 1672
Pedro Calungsod (July 21, 1654 - April 2, 1672), a Filipino from Cebu, together with Spanish Jesuit missionary Diego Luis de San Vitores were killed by natives in Tumon, Guam.
Calungsod went to Guam with San Vitores to preach Christianity to the Chamorros but the village chief named Mata'pang plotted to kill them after they baptized his daughter.
Together with a villager named Hirao, they succeeded in killing Calungsod and San Vitores and dumped their bodies in the waters of Tumon Bay.
Calungsod was beatified by Pope John Paul II on March 5, 2000 and was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012.
He is Cebu's first saint and the second Filipino saint after St. Lorenzo Ruiz of Manila.
