Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
APRIL 1, 1945
As part of Gen. Douglas MacArthur's offensive to free the Philippines, the 158th Regimental Combat Team (RCT) "Bushmasters" under the command of Gen. Harold MacNider invaded the Bicol Peninsula and landed at Legaspi in Southern Luzon.
The Bushmasters captured the town and the airfield unmindful of the Japanese snipers.
In other parts of Luzon, American and Filipino forces engaged the Shimbu Group under Gen. Yokohama and the Japanese 14th Army of Gen. Yamashita.
As they proceeded inland, they met fierce opposition but finally defeated the Japanese troops on April 4, 1945.
Gen. MacNider's leadership earned for him numerous awards and citations.
