April 2023 Stamp Meetup

Our April stamp meetup is set on April 29 to 30 at Edmund's place in Camotes Island but some of us still decided to have an impromptu meetup today too.

Pedro Calungsod Dies In Guam

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):

APRIL 2, 1672

Pedro Calungsod (July 21, 1654 - April 2, 1672), a Filipino from Cebu, together with Spanish Jesuit missionary Diego Luis de San Vitores were killed by natives in Tumon, Guam. 

Calungsod went to Guam with San Vitores to preach Christianity to the Chamorros but the village chief named Mata'pang plotted to kill them after they baptized his daughter. 

Together with a villager named Hirao, they succeeded in killing Calungsod and San Vitores and dumped their bodies in the waters of Tumon Bay. 

Calungsod was beatified by Pope John Paul II on March 5, 2000 and was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012. 

He is Cebu's first saint and the second Filipino saint after St. Lorenzo Ruiz of Manila.

Francisco Baltazar

Today in Philippine History:

APRIL 2, 1788

Francisco Baltazar (April 2, 1788 - February 20, 1862), the Father of Tagalog Poetry was born in Bigaa, Bulacan. 

Popularly known as Francisco Balagtas, he was an orator and a poet. 

His works in literature and poetry have greatly influenced Filipino culture. 

Florante at Laura published in 1838, is his masterpiece while Balagtasan, the Filipino debate in extemporaneous verse is named after him.

158th RCT "Bushmasters" Invades Bicol

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):

APRIL 1, 1945

As part of Gen. Douglas MacArthur's offensive to free the Philippines, the 158th Regimental Combat Team (RCT) "Bushmasters" under the command of Gen. Harold MacNider invaded the Bicol Peninsula and landed at Legaspi in Southern Luzon. 

The Bushmasters captured the town and the airfield unmindful of the Japanese snipers. 

In other parts of Luzon, American and Filipino forces engaged the Shimbu Group under Gen. Yokohama and the Japanese 14th Army of Gen. Yamashita. 

As they proceeded inland, they met fierce opposition but finally defeated the Japanese troops on April 4, 1945. 

Gen. MacNider's leadership earned for him numerous awards and citations.

Pres. Emilio Aguinaldo Swears Allegiance To The U.S.

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

APRIL 1, 1901

President Emilio Aguinaldo swore allegiance to the United Sates and issued a proclamation addressed to the Filipino people and called his generals and soldiers to recognize the sovereignty of the US over the Philippines. 

This was defied by some generals, Katipuneros and Moro fighters in Mindanao thereby extending the Philippine-American War.
