The 1987 Philippine Constitution, the supreme law of the Republic of the Philippines, was ratified by the Filipino people in a nationwide plebiscite during the term of President Corazon C. Aquino.
In the past, three other constitutions governed the country. These are the 1935 Commonwealth Constitution, the 1973 Constitution, and the 1986 Freedom Constitution.
The 1899 Malolos Constitution, which was the first constitution that established a Philippine Republic was not fully implemented throughout the Philippines and was not internationally recognized after its adoption because of the Philippine-American War.
President Aquino appointed forty eight individuals from various backgrounds to compose the Constitutional Commission.
The commission elected Cecilia Muñoz-Palma, an associate Justice of the Supreme Court, as its president.
The final draft was completed on October 12, 1986 and was presented to President Aquino on October 15, 1986.
The constitution provided for a tripartite system composed of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches.
The Executive Branch is headed by the President. The Legislative Branch is composed of the Senate and House of Representatives. The Senate has twenty four senators headed by the Senate President while the House has district representatives and party list representatives headed by the Speaker of the House of the Representatives. The Judicial Branch is composed of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice and 14 Associate Justice, and the lower courts.
February 2 is celebrated as Constitution Day.
