Protesters Call For Pres. Arroyo's Ouster

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):

October 13, 2005

Around 300 militant students marched the streets of Manila on October 13, 2005 and headed towards MalacaƱang Palace. The protesters waved flags and carried slogans demanding the ouster of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Dozens were injured when anti-riot police fired waters cannons in an attempt to stop their protest. Some water-drenched activists were nabbed by the police but no charges were filed against them.

The protesters were successfully dispersed by the police in the confrontation between authorities and anti-government groups in the wake of almost daily demonstrations to defy the new tough policy by the Arroyo government against rallies without permits.

A month earlier, President Arroyo ordered the police to break up rallies that have no permits. She also issued a gag order on any official who is called to appear before legislative investigations organized by opposition lawmakers. The opposition leaders openly compared her to President Ferdinand Marcos.
