Dr. Jorge Bocobo

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 19, 1886

Dr. Jorge Bocobo (October 19, 1886 - July 23, 1965), a scholar, lawyer, writer, journalist, educator, and justice of the Supreme Court, was born in Gerona, Tarlac. He wrote speeches and statements for Manuel L. Quezon and went to four independence missions to the United States in 1919, 1922, 1923 and 1924. He was the 5th president of the University of the Philippines from 1934 to 1939. Dr. Bocobo translated into English, Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, Andres Bonifacio’s Decalogue, the Code of Kalantiaw, and the Philippine National Hymn.

Pres. George W. Bush Arrives In Manila

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 18, 2003

George Walker Bush, the 43rd President of the United States arrived in Manila for a state visit and was met by Vice Pres. Teofisto Guingona Jr. and U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Francis Ricciardone. 

First Lady Laura Bush along with other staff members were also with him aboard Air Force One. 

In Malacañang Palace, Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo greeted the American president, who was given full military honors and a 21-gun salute. 

Bush was president from January 20, 2001 to January 20, 2009.

Fray Domingo de Salazar Signs Resolution On Slavery

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 17, 1581

Fray Domingo de Salazar, the first bishop of the Philippine Islands signed a 3-point resolution for Governor and Captain-General Gonzalo Ronquillo de Peñalosa that concerned a Royal decree on the treatment of slaves by their masters. 

Bishop Salazar sealed the letter after a meeting with the Dominican, Jesuit, Augustinian and Franciscan prelates, who affixed their signatures at the St. Augustine Monastery in Tondo. 

The prelates emphasized the late King Charles V’s decree that all Indios or Indians discovered or to be discovered should not be allowed to become slaves.

The 1st Philippine Assembly

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 16, 1907

The 1st Philippine Assembly, the Lower House with 80 representatives duly elected in a national election, was inaugurated at the Grand Opera House. 

Secretary of War William Howard Taft and Governor-General James Francis Smith attended the event with Sergio Osmeña as Speaker and Manuel Quezon as Majority Floor Leader. 

The American-dominated Philippine Commission became the Upper House. 

The Jones Law changed the set-up, and on October 16, 1916, the Philippine Legislature composed of the Senate and House of Representatives was inaugurated.

Lt. Col. Abad Releases Capt. Shields

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 15, 1900

Lt. Col. Maximo Abad, the Chief of the Revolutionary Forces in Marinduque released Capt. Devereux Shields and his men in Buenavista, after Gen. Luther Rector Hare arrived and harassed the towns. 

Earlier, on September 13, 1900, Shields along with 52 men from the 29th U.S. Volunteers went to the mountains of Torrijos to capture Abad and his guerrillas. 

The Battle of Pulang Lupa began when Shields and his troops engaged Abad’s forces but were surprised to be surrounded on all sides. 

Defeated and wounded, Shields raised a white flag to surrender.

Jose P. Laurel Takes Oath As President

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 14, 1943

The Japanese-sponsored Philippine Republic was inaugurated. 

Supreme Court Chief Justice Jose Yulo administered the oath of office to Jose P. Laurel, who was sworn in as President of the Republic of the Philippines. 

The Philippine flag, which was used during the Philippine-American War, was hoisted by former President Emilio Aguinaldo and Gen. Artemio Ricarte. 

Later in the afternoon, Laurel signed the Japan-Philippines Pact of Alliance which provided political, economic and military cooperation between the two countries.

Teresa Magbanua

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 13, 1868

Teresa “Nay Isa” Magbanua y Ferraris (October 13, 1868 - August 1947), a schoolteacher, military leader, and the "Joan of Arc of the Visayas" was born in Pototan, Iloilo. 

She joined the Panay-based Visayan arm of Andres Bonifacio’s Katipunan when the Philippine Revolution broke out in 1896. 

She served in Emilio Aguinaldo’s revolutionary army as a unit commander under Gen. Martin Delgado. 

Riding a horse, “Nay Isa” led her men to victory against the Spanish forces in the Battle of Barrio Yoting in Pilar, Capiz and in the Battle of Sap-ong Hill in 1898.
