British Troops Advance To Intramuros

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 5, 1762

Augmented by heavy bombardment from the British fleet under Rear-Admiral Samuel Cornish,  Brig. Gen. William Draper ordered his troops to advance and capture the walled city of Intramuros. 

The Spanish troops were no match against the superior British forces. Seeing the futility of further resistance, Archbishop Manuel Antonio Rojo surrendered Manila. 

British troops immediately looted churches, government offices, the Governor General’s Palace and the houses of wealthy residents. 

Rape, killings and vandalism were also committed by the invaders.

Cebu Stamp Club Prepares For F2F Meetup

After the pandemic, we are now ready for the F2F meetup starting next month.

We are also accepting members again both local and international and will be acting on the membership requests from collectors mostly from outside the country. 

Our new membership card is made of pvc material. 

The club will be coming up with a very affordable group healthcare (hmo) coverage for active members including their dependents soon but it will be shouldered by the members.

The Battles of La Naval De Manila Ends

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 4, 1646

The Battles of La Naval de Manila ended after the naval forces of the Dutch invaders consisting of 18 warships were defeated by the joint Spanish and Filipino fleet of 3 Manila galleons, 1 galley and 4 brigantines.

The series of battles took place in 1646 on March 15, July 23, July 29, September 16 and October 4. 

After their victory, the Spanish-Filipino forces walked barefooted to the shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Santo Domingo Church to give thanks for the Virgin’s intercession. 

The naval victory was declared a miracle by the Archdiocese of Manila on April 9, 1662.

The Philippine Presidents On Stamps

Adding more pages and making a new page design in the coming days for my upcoming stamp and photo historical presentation Selyo ug Kasaysayan: Ang Presidente for Cebu Stamp Club's 25th anniversary. 

The Philippine Presidents On Stamps used to be 48 pages but will be 64 pages when done. 

These stamps are the stars of the presentation and will be mounted in the main panel boards. 

Included is the signed cover by President Cory Aquino when she came to Cebu. 

I am still waiting for the President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. stamps to be released by the Philippine Postal Corporation. 

They released the inaugural covers of the president and vice president some months ago.

Eng Kang Leads The Sangley Rebellion

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 3, 1603

Eng Kang, a rich Chinese merchant led the Sangley Rebellion in Manila and attacked Tondo and Quiapo by burning the buildings and killing the inhabitants. 

On their way to apprehend the rebels, former Gov. Luis Perez Dasmariñas and his men were ambushed and killed with their heads mounted on poles and displayed all over Manila. 

The Spaniards, Filipinos and Japanese joined forces and successfully repulsed the rebels who retreated to the hills of Laguna after a failed attempt to capture the city. 

20,000 Chinese were killed in the retaliatory attacks.

Dr. Candido M. Africa

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 2, 1895

Candido Macasaet Africa (October 2, 1895 - February 12,1945), a doctor of medicine, scholar and researcher, was born in Lipa, Batangas. 

He was the first Filipino to be internationally recognized for his contributions to medical science. His researches focused on parasites that caused heart failure. 

He discovered four human flukes that attached themselves to the heart, that led to a  disease resulting in death. 

This was hailed as a significant contribution to medical science that benefited heart patients. 

Dr. Africa died during the battle for the liberation of Manila in 1945.

Bishop Alfredo Ma. Obviar, D.D.

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

OCTOBER 1, 1889

Bishop Alfredo Ma. Obviar, D.D. (August 29, 1889 – October 1, 1978), Filipino Servant of God and Bishop of Lucena, died on the feast day of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, the Patroness of Missions. 

Bishop Obviar founded the Missionary Catechists of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus (MCST) on August 12, 1958 in San Narciso, Quezon. 

He ordained Ricardo Jamin Vidal to the priesthood on March 17, 1956. Vidal would become cardinal and Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Cebu. 

Bishop Obviar’s beatification is underway. Pope Francis declared him Venerable.
