Anti-graft Court Convicts President Erap

SEPTEMBER 12, 2007

The Sandiganbayan anti-graft court convicted President Joseph Ejercito Estrada for the crime of plunder and imposed the penalty of reclusion perpetua or life sentence. 

On October 26, 2007, President Estrada was granted executive clemency by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and his civil and political rights were restored. 

Popularly known as Erap and born Jose Marcelo Ejercito, President Estrada is a popular movie actor and producer who became mayor, senator, and vice president to President Fidel V. Ramos.

He won a landslide victory and became the 13th President of the Republic of the Philippines. He was ousted from power through the EDSA People Power 2 in 1991 which installed Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as the new president. Erap later became the mayor of Manila.

The 13 Martyrs Of Cavite

Today in  Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

SEPTEMBER 12, 1896

Thirteen Katipunan members, later called Los Trece Martires de Cavite (Thirteen Martyrs of Cavite) were put to death by musketry at Plaza de Armas outside Fort San Felipe in Cavite, days after Andres Bonifacio started the revolution. 

Luís Aguado, Eugenio Cabezas, Feliciano Cabuco, Agapito Conchu, Alfonso de Ocampo, Máximo Gregorio, Máximo Inocencio, José Lallana, Severino Lapidario, Victoriano Luciano III, Francisco Osorio, Hugo Pérez and Antonio San Agustín were arrested after authorities learned of Emilio Aguinaldo’s plan to attack the Fort.

I Am Back!

It's been a long time since I last opened this blogpage. I got tied up with work being one of the managers in a nationwide company here in Cebu. I will be deleting old posts of my Today in Philippine History Series 1 starting today and repost them again along with the newer Series 2. It's going to be two series every day. 

Writing and creating the daily cards for Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition) has increased my respect and admiration for the men and women who built this nation. For all data to be accurate, I made sure to research from many sources as I do come across a lot of wrong dates and wrong situations. Series 1 with more than 500 stories was started on February 28, 2014 and was completed before 2014 ended. Series 2 has around 375 stories that began on March 2, 2018. This is my humble contribution for love of country and passion for Philippine philately.

Cebu Stamp Club @ 25

Happy Birthday Cebu Stamp Club! I am blessed to be given the opportunity to have founded this international group in 1996 and registered in 1997. 

We celebrated many years of fun, friendship and stamp collecting. The pandemic hampered the members from continuing the hobby meetup but we kept in touch. 

A major historical stamp and photo presentation from my collections is scheduled to be launched soon to celebrate 25 years of promoting philippine philately. 

It will also coincide with a grand reunion in one of the hotels here in Cebu. These events will also be a tribute to our departed members who were active in making CSCI to what it is today. To God be the glory! 

Francisco Ortigas Sr.

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):

SEPTEMBER 11, 1875

Francisco Ortigas Sr. (September 11, 1875 - November 1935), a lawyer and the patriarch of the Ortigas family was born in Porac, Pampanga. 

He was a scholar at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran and finished law at the University of Santo Tomas. 

Together with Rafael del Pan and Frederick Fisher, they opened the Ortigas, del Pan and Fisher Law Office. 

He founded Ortigas and Company, Limited Partnership in 1931 and acquired the 4,033 hectare estate, Hacienda de Mandaloyon. 

He married Julia Vargas de Ortigas and was the father of Francisco Ortigas Jr.

President Ferdinand E. Marcos

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

SEPTEMBER 11, 1917

Ferdinand E. Marcos (September 11, 1917 – September 28, 1989), the tenth President of the Philippines, was born in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte. 

He was 2nd District Representative of Ilocos Norte (1949-59), Senator (1959-1965), and President in 1965. 

He won a second term in 1969 and before the end of his term, he declared martial law in 1972, that extended his constitutional term. 

He was the sixth President of the Third Republic, and the first President of the Fourth Republic. He ruled for 21 years and was ousted by the EDSA People Power revolt in 1986.

A Philatelist Writer and Exhibitor

I love stamps, history, writing and doing exhibits! It started in 1996 when I came up with one-man exhibits from my collections for Cebu Stamp Club in Ayala Center Cebu, SM City Cebu and other malls.

That same year, Stamplines began for the Freeman newspaper until 2001. The biggest exhibit I did was in 2013 at Fort San Pedro titled “Selyo ug Kasaysayan sa Fort” (Stamps and History at the Fort) which ended in 2015. ABS-CBN Cebu’s MagTV Na featured it in their Sunday show on June 8, 2014 and was included in Erwin de la Cerna’s coffee table book Fort San Pedro in 2016 and in Manila Bulletin in 2017. 

Two years earlier in 2014, while the fort exhibit was ongoing, an idea came up to feature Philippine history everyday in Facebook using stamps and photos. Series 1 began on February 28, 2014 and the almost 500 story cards were completed before the year ended. Four years later, on March 2, 2018, Series 2 was posted with around 370 stories. 

This is my humble contribution for love of country and the promotion of philately. Thanks to all the sponsors and those who supported us through the years. Hopefully this year, a new exhibit will be launched featuring the presidency. To God be the glory!
